Have you ever been through your holidays not knowing what to do? Most of us have been through that phase of “what to do “and “I am so bored” during some holiday or the other. This could happen when you do not plan for your holidays. Much as you would like to relax and not-do-anything at all in your holidays, things can get a bit boring when there is too much of not-do-anything. Therefore, it is better to plan in order to add a little excitement to your holidays. The best way to spend holidays is with friends and family. So, why not have a party? Sharing some great ideas for holiday themed parties:

1. Old Bollywood movies

This has been used and reused many times over but is as fun as always. This time, keep the colors away. Play with black and white for your décor. You may compile a few popular scenes from the old movies and play them with a projector on a white wall. Try to include some humorous ones. You could then have your guests to enact one of their favorite scenes, maybe with a twist. For e.g. For the scene from Sholay in which Gabbar is expressing his annoyance at his men for having returned as failures, you could have role reversal and ask a female guest to play the role of Gabbar. To continue having fun, organize for a karaoke session of old Bollywood songs. This is one thoroughly enjoyable session no matter the singer sings well or badly.

2. Mysterious masquerade holiday party

Incorporate a little fun and mystery into your party with this fancy theme. Inform your guests while inviting them about the theme. This theme requires the attendees to wear a mask that conceals their identity and complements their outfit. Bold and dark colors like purple, red, gold and black are primarily used in this theme. Select appropriate music which will encourage dancing at your party. Keep some masks aside to provide those guests who arrive without one. Place a bar at one side of the party venue so that the center of the hall is free for dancing.

3. Amar Chitra Katha Theme 

Summer holidays call for some family time together. What better way, other than this party, to make it an enjoyable event for both grownups and kids? Ask your guests to dress up as their favorite character from the Amar Chitra Katha Comics. Organize for finger foods and refreshing drinks. Decorate the party hall to make it resemble the days from the famous Amar Chitra Katha comics. You may ask your decorator to help you with the aesthetics. Play games right out from the comics with a modern touch. For e.g. Point and shoot with a bow and arrow (with a rubber tip of course). Do not forget folk music and dances! 

4. Santa is here

Christmas vacation calls for a Christmas theme party. Why not have a Santa’s workshop? Ask your guests to bring a few bit and pieces, which can be used in making decorative items like ribbons, little stars and colored balls, tassels, colored paper, etc. Collect and put all the items together and have your guests create Christmas tree decorations out of them. Once done they can gift each other their work of art. Have some chocolate filled paper cones hanging from the Christmas tree as décor, which, you can later gift to the kids when they leave.

5. Chocolate world

You will need the help of your not just your  decorator but of your caterer too. Discuss your theme and party venue with him and plan what goes where. Conservative does not work here. Be creative and bold. Your décor should be edible. Think Chocolate flowers in vases filled with colorful candy, a curtain of jelly beans on strings and the chocolate fountain, etc. Encourage your guests to enjoy the delicacies. Party games can be made more fun if the reward is chocolate. E.g., hang the candies in a line on strings at an appropriate height for grown-ups and for children. It should be just out of reach of their mouth when raised on tiptoe. Ask your guests to reach out and eat as many candies as they can with their hands tied behind their backs. 6. Enchanted world theme 

Revisit childhood with this theme. Create a fantasy world of Peter Pan and Ali Baba and Snow White with the help of your decorator. When space is a constraint, book a banquet hall in Mumbai and get your decorator to help you create that magical land where your guests can let their imagination take wings. You can allow your caterer to get creative with the menu as well. Cookies in the shape of popular characters like Gingerbread man, Cinderella, Winnie the Pooh and others, steaming hot cauldrons (of soup of course) with a wicked witch stirring and serving her “magic potion”. What a delight to see different storybook characters serve you at the party.

7. Circus theme

Go all out and make your party venue a color riot. Splashes of vibrant colors in stripes and polka dots will make your party hall look lively. 8. Colour theme 

If not anything else, why not plan a party with your favorite color as the theme. Imagine looking around at so many colors – your favorite one – around you. For e.g. let’s say Rainbow theme. Start with the décor and menu. Having a theme like this allows you a lot of scopes to play with colors. Balanced properly, this theme could be a lot of fun. From the décor to the dressing to the food and games, this theme flows effortlessly everywhere. Plan with your  caterer to display a pleasing color coordinated menu. Go with the basics for the main course. You can create the rainbow effect in the snacks, drinks, and desserts. Play games like a treasure hunt (color based), and segregate the colored balls using a straw, etc.

9. Diwali party – theme of lights

Diwali is, of course, a festival of lights. Add a little more sparkle to your Diwali party by using the lights a little differently. If you are hosting your party outdoors, hang string lights overhead to resemble a canopy of stars. They could also be used a curtain around your party area. Burn less or no crackers to celebrate an eco-friendly Diwali. Instead to make your guests have fun, include activities like diya decoration, candles, and bangles, diya lighting competition and roll the dice and pass the sweets.
